Leadership model Essay

â€Å"Discuss what leadership theory/model you would use as a health care leader and the theory/model you believe is least effective. Explain why the models you’ve selected would or would not work in a healthcare field.† Among a dozens of leadership theory/models listed in the book of â€Å"leadership for health professionals†, I would like to say that Bennis’s competency-based model of leadership is most effective one in the health care field, while House’s charismatic leadership model† is least one. Bennis competency-based model has been widely embraced by professional organizations. This model suggests that the skills and tools necessary to lead organizations must be learned-whether through incremental on-the-job training, formal education, or years of professional development. It implies that leaders are made and not simply born. To become chair of any departments of medical division, one cannot effectively hold such a position without yea rs of medical education and a successful practice of medicine because the correct diagnosis and proper treatment for patients are the fundamental goal of all hospitals. The competent leader is a key point to reach this goal. Let’s take the department of pathology and laboratory medicine as an example. The department of pathology has several division including clinical pathology, surgical pathology and blood banking. Each division has several subdivisions. For example, surgical pathology includes microscopy diagnosis made by pathologist, grossing surgical specimen performed by pathologist’s assistants, and tissue slides prepared by histotechnologists. The head of department of pathology is always held by pathologists rather than pathologist assistants or histotechnologists. Why? The answer is it is pathologists who have finished 4 years medical school education, 5-years resident and fellowship training and many years of practices. During the study in medical school and training in hospitals, Patholgosits go through all divisions and subdivisions in the department of pathology, they knew how to make diagnosis, how to dissect the specimen, how to get the tissue section, how to perform flow cytometry , how to determine the blood crossmatching. Therefore, whenever there are tech nical problems which other staffs cannot resolve, Pathologist is able to do it. Moreover, because pathologists know how each division functions, they can manage the workflow well, coordinate the each division and understand the tough issues in each  division. For instance, they know the difficulty to cut the bone sample, they would not demand the perfect bone slides which made by technologists. On the other hand, Pathologsit’s assistant and histotechnologist spends only 2 and 1 year studying in specific fields of either grossing or microtoming, respectively. They don’t know how other divisions works. Thus, it is hard for them to lead the department of pathology. In terms of House’s charismatic leadership model, I think it would not work in the healthcare field. First of all, unlike competency-based model which can be measured by the leaders’ education background and working experience, charismatic leadership inspires followership through intangibles in personality that cannot be measured by any tangible property in a universal way. Similar to the old adage â€Å"beauty is in the eye of the beholder†, charisma is in the eye of the beholder. Therefore, levels of acceptance and acknowledgement cannot be uniformly communicated by the members of the organization. Without the professional skill and profound knowledge in the field of healthcare, the leadership can be challenged and questioned by staffs who are not the beholder. Secondly, the charismatic leadership model suggests that the charismatic leaders are born with this quality. It is very difficult for those without natural charisma to mimic those who possess this natural ability on the long-term basis. It’s important for leaders in the fields of politics and business to possess Charismatic personality, for example, President John F Kennedy who inspired trust, faith and confidence in nonmechanical ways. However, JFK would not be successful chair of department of pathology because he would lack professional discourse in the medical field and could not solve the technical problems to make a correct diagnosis. All in all, each leadership theory/model has its strength and weakness, as well as applications for use. As far as I am concerned, Bennis competency-based model is the most applicable to leading health organizations, whereas House’s charismatic leadership model† is least effective way.

Drivers: the Most Dangerous Types Essay

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 6,800,000 car crashes occur in the United States each year (â€Å"Talking Points-Aggressive Driving Prosecutor’s Planner†). Of the 6,800,000 crashes, substantial amounts are contributed by certain types of drivers. Becoming more educated about driving and all the dangers that come along with it can be beneficial in preventing someone else from becoming one of these statistics. Of vehicular crashes, three types of drivers contribute to the numbers the most: aggressive, distracted, and teenage. First, aggressive drivers are one of the most dangerous drivers. According to the NHTSA, almost 13,000 people have been injured or killed since 1990 in car crashes caused by aggressive driving (â€Å"Talking Points-Aggressive Driving Prosecutor’s Planner†). There are a number of causes that provoke road rage. According to one survey, the number one thing that irked road raging drive rs the most was when other drivers were talking on their cell phones (â€Å"A Statistical Look into Road Rage†). Additionally, of those surveyed, 55 percent were annoyed by drivers who cut across traffic without paying attention (â€Å"A Statistical Look into Road Rage†). Other factors that provoke aggressive drivers are texting while driving, driving too fast, driving too slowly, and tailgating. Second, distracted drivers are also very dangerous on the roadways. According to the NHTSA, an estimated 448,000 people were injured in accidents where distracted driving was reported (â€Å"Traffic Safety Facts†). Further, the NHTSA reported that sixteen percent of fatal car accidents in 2009 involved a distracted driver (â€Å"Traffic Safety Facts†). Drivers under the age of 20 compile the group of most distracted drivers. A lot of factors play into distracted driving. According to the General Estimates System (GES) database from the NHTSA (â€Å"Traffic Safet y Facts†), some of the things that distract drivers most are other occupants in the car, talking on or listening to a cellular device, adjusting the climate controls and/or radio, and eating/drinking (â€Å"Traffic Safety Facts†). As reported by the NHTSA, at any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using their cell phones or other electronic devices while driving (â€Å"What is Distracted Driving†). Finally, the teenage driver can be quite dangerous. This includes drivers from ages 15 to 19. The risk of motor vehicle accidents is highest among   this age group, more than any other age group, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (â€Å"Teen Drivers: Fact Sheet†). According to the NHTSA, this group accounts for almost 282,000 of the injured people involved in motor vehicle accidents (â€Å"Teen Drivers: Fact Sheet†). Among teen drivers, the death rate for male drivers is almost two times higher than that of their female counterpart. Unsafe speeds are the leading contributor in accidents among teen drivers. Another contributing factor is the fact that teens have poor hazard detection. Their lack of experience and skill contribu tes to this. As can be seen, there are several types of dangerous drivers. Aggressive drivers take out their frustration on other drivers, resulting in many accidents. Distracted drivers allow themselves to become unfocused when their full attention should be on the road. Teenage drivers cause the majority of roadway accidents, mainly due to inexperience and lack of skill. Becoming more educated about one’s own driving style and that of those around an individual can help someone to become a better, more cautious driver. Lazy Americans

A college professor wrote an article aboyt how she thinks American student are lazy. Different people have different oppinions on this subject. Although many believe that american students are lazy and others believe they are not. I think it just depends on your background, and family life. You cant just judge someone by what they dowithout knowing where they come from. Students from different countries have great work ethics, they pay attention well in class, and do really good on their work. most of their effprt comes from relations with family. For foreign students they come to ameica to study because the education is better so their parents bring them here. Foreign students work really hard , because they came here to study and they think that its a great opportunity. But i have also met some foreign exchange students that are lazy and have really bad work ethics, and i have talked to them and they are having problems at home. Most people tink that american students are lazy, but i have met some really out going Americans. My friend Sarah Doud, she is American and she is a 3. student andshe is a hard working student. I know i kid, his name is lewis. He is a 4. 0 student and is taking way advanced classes and he is american. Those two examples i just gave are American and hard working. And they come from loving families and have loving friends. I have also met some lazy americans as well, but they come from bad families that dont care about their childs grades. There are also the middle students who are American and dont do bad, but dont do good. These students come from families who dont really care about their grades. And its mostly students whos parents travelor are rarely home because of their work. But the students know better than to let their grades slip. These students are self motivated but i dont think that is enough. I think that they need more motivation. There are many lazy students, and there are also many hard working students. I think it just depends on the students family problems if any. Sure habits are hard to break, but there is a reason in the first place why they have those habbits. American teenages need more motivation, because i dont think they get enough.

I will imagine myself as a strong, confident and decisive person. I will think and act positively. I plan to learn new study habits. I will be able to speak with my teachers and advisors about my problems. Procedure: First, I will have the confidence to ask for help. Next, I will not waste time, energy and effort by worrying about my weakness and deficits. I will seek help and ask more questions to better myself. I will be more open about my problems. Finally, I will stop worrying about problems and work through them. Test of Achieving Goal: I will know I have achieved this goal, when I become more comfortable asking for help to develop better study habits. The proof will be seen in my test scores and research papers, which will show me that I can improve my grades in college through perseverance. Interpersonal Communications Improvement Summary My original intention was to use confident behavior to improve my study skills, so that I may get better grades. I feel that I accomplished this, even in such a short time. Emailing my teachers was a small step, but I believe it will pay off in the long run. Each time I talked to one of my teachers and coaches, it gave me more confidence to try again. They were all receptive to my needs, and gave me good advice to help improve my grades and my study habits. I would have to say that my biggest concern was asking for help from my parents. However, by the time I talked to my parents, my confidence level was up from my interactions with my teachers and coaches. I do not get as frustrated as I have in the past. I also felt concern over how my coach would view me after I opened up to him. His reaction was very supportive, as were my parents. I now feel a lot of encouragement from the people who are most important to me. It means so much to me that they were all willing to sit down and go over assignments with me and give me many good study tips. I am now more comfortable talking to them because I know they believe in me. I was surprised about how much easier studying has become since applying the tips I have received, especially from Dr. Bommarito. I am anxious to see the results in my improved test scores and research papers. My self-concept has greatly improved. I feel confident that I can get the help I need by just asking for it. I feel confident in my new study skills. I feel confident that I can continue to learn more study skills, and that I can improve my grades by applying what I have learned. This has been a good experience for me overall.

Tracing the pathway of a cheeseburger through the entire digestive Essay

Tracing the pathway of a cheeseburger through the entire digestive system - Essay Example The term "animal testing" means the procedures done on the bodies of the animals. It is majorly for the purposes of research into pure biology and ailments, evaluating the efficiency of new medicinal yields. Moreover, it is also meant for testing the health of human beings besides assessing the safety of the environment of consumer and industry products. Animal testing began a long time ago. Mother Tongue by Amy Tan Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Mother Tongue by Amy Tan - Essay Example Given the portrayal of language skills by Tan, one cannot help but agree with the authoress. The bonds associated with language and the resulting personalized recognition is all too common in everyone’s life. One major issue faced by immigrant families is that it may not be possible for all members of the family to speak flawless English as indicated in the essay by Tan. In order to shed light on this concept, she quotes a story narrated by her mother. The story itself was trivial but the noteworthy point was her mother’s grammatical errors. The content was quite hard to decipher due to those grammatical mistakes; however, the authoress asserts that her mother apparently had an excellent grip over English. As a child, her mother’s â€Å"broken† English mortified Tan. She considered that imperfection of speech actually depicted imperfection of thoughts. On the other hand, her mother encouraged her to think distinctively. Years later, she appreciates the ess ence of unique thinking and academically studies English. It was at this point in time that she recognized the meaningfulness and worth of being able to use various types of English Language, and started appreciating her mother’s potential. Their broken English symbolizes a language of intimacy between them, where they can speak anything grammatically wrong to covey something special. This newfound love and knowledge compelled her to write about her mother, â€Å"I wanted to capture what language ability tests can never reveal: her intent, her passion, her imager, the rhythms of her speech, and the nature of her thoughts†. Tan was so inspired by her mother’s heritage that she resolved that her mother should be the first reader and critic. She states at the end, â€Å"I knew I had succeeded where it counted when my mother finished reading my book and gave me her verdict: so easy to read†. All of us undergo similar experiences, carrying hidden treasures wit hin us and sometimes being away or detached from our roots enables us to appreciate the true worth of those treasures. Tan's fundamental purpose in writing is to produce texts, which are comprehensible for a ‘common man’ like her mother. I was touched and captivated by the true to life context of Tan’s work. It is primarily directed at immigrant families and students who use English as a second language for studying and the like. However, for the authoress, her mother is the most imperative target. She appears to have contemplated extensively on the power and role of language and expresses her perspective through this essay. She maintains that the importance of a language does not lie in its being broken or perfect. She emphasizes familial languages should be protected, preserved. English enabled her to gain knowledge, recognize the world around her; hence, she considered it her mother tongue. The tone of the authoress is sentimental as the essay revolves around her personal experiences. Thereby, several statements and reviews based on her past are illustrated as she writes in the start, â€Å"I cannot give you much more than personal opinions†. It appears that the authoress has an additional objective, to express gratitude.

Pros and cons of preschool and childrens development Term Paper

Pros and cons of preschool and childrens development - Term Paper Example Preschools arrange such outdoor activities that help children learn how to use their problem-solving skills and make choices. Children should learn in preschools the basic knowledge base which should help them in their academics when they go in kindergarten and the following years. The goal of preschools is to make the children learn comprehension, making predictions and decisions, solving problems, drawing logics, and interrelating images and language. Hence, preschools focus on the cognitive development of children preparing them for actual academics. They are taught concepts of time management, cleanliness, concentration, and innovation. Pros The activities and pretend play at a preschool is very efficient way of getting the preschoolers learn new ideas and skills that will help them in their coming lives. Their development can be â€Å"stimulated both by providing opportunity for children to learn on their own in play and by interacting in which the adults deliberately teaches s ome thing† (Dhingra, Manhas, & Raina, 2005). At 3 years of age, children want to initiate projects and play activities that help them build confident personalities, and the guilt or suppression can ruin their personalities for their entire lives (Erikson, 1994).
