November 2014 Research Paper: Catholicism in China and the Underground Churches For quite some time now the Chinese government has controlled its society in a multitude of ways, including through religion. Catholicism specifically, is a religion that speaks to many people in China, however, they have not been able to fully support and practice their chosen faith due to the governmental restraints that have been applied. While Christianity may be the fastest growing religion in the nation, only about half of the believers recognize the Vatican, and therefore the Pope, as well. Some may say that as the years pass, the Chinese government may be becoming more lenient towards those who observe Catholicism, but this is not always the case and can be seen through recent developments regarding this particular Asian country. In the mid-1900s, the Communist party started to take control over main-land China in ways that the country was not expecting, and in no time at all, the world’s largest nation became atheist. China cut all connections with the Vatican af ter the Communists claimed power, and countless people were imprisoned, abused, and killed for practicing their faith. The citizens no longer had charge over anything (including their religion), and whatever the government said, they had to abide by or risk being tortured for disobeying the rules.
